site description:

barn on farm grounds

objective:

From an old dilapidated barn/ garage, on the grounds of a 1711 farmhouse, this project was developed using some of the existing components of what this old building once was. On the upper level an open architectural studio was created with passive solar heating and sustainable materials. The lower level below, was divided into a workshop, storage and garage. A bank of windows on the southern wall of the studio allows passive solar gain, day-lighting and wonderful views.

elements:

· passive solar design

· exposed beam

· open plan allows for flexible work space and day-lighting

· uses existing foundation

· industrial formaldehyde-free particle board flooring

· natural slate counter-top

publications:

The project was published in the Boston Globe Magazine in 1999 and in ‘The Inspired Workspace’ book.
