Flight 93 Memorial
Competition
Shanksville,PA

Site description:

Vast open land used for strip mining

Objective:

To create a memorial which expresses the magnitude of this event and honors the 40 people that sacraficed their lives for a larger cause.

Approach:

The opportunity to have a memorial at the actual spot of the event allows an intervention which fuses our experience, the crash site and the memorial together simultaneously. For this reason we wanted to create a structure which became the means by which one could intertwine with the actual sacred space of the crash site, and feel the essence of its magnitude, its intimacy and its emotion.

Elements:

·  Vast cantilevered walkway
·  Translucent glass piers
